International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination at UNESCO

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination the Social and Human Sciences Sector is organizing a series of activities at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, on 19 March 2008.
This year, as in 2006, UNESCO is partnering with the initiative “Le Pari(s) du Vivre-Ensemble” and will devote this important day to the theme “School and Immigration”.
This event will be comprised of three parts:
Vernissage
A private viewing of the exhibition: “One Face to Another, Different Views on the History of France and Algeria, Yesterday and Today” will take place at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition realized with pupils and teachers of the College Léon Blum in Villiers-le-Bel, France (95) as well as the photographer Guillaume Lecoque received the Evens Award for intercultural education. The exhibition will remain open to the public next to room XI at UNESCO from 20 to 27 March 2008.
Documentary
At 7:15 p.m. a screening of the documentary “La Vie avant la mienne” is scheduled in room XI. Pupils from the College Jean Vilar in Grigny, France (91), being children of migrants, question their parents about their origins, the reasons for their emigration and their experience of living in France.
Round Table
At 7:45 p.m. a round table on the theme “School and Immigration” chaired by Ms. Patricia Sitruk, Director-General of the Cité nationale de l’histoire de l’immigration (a public institution dedicated to the history of immigration) will provide an opportunity to personalities with diverse backgrounds including civil society representatives to take the floor and share their views.
